Grimm

Grimm is the leader of the Grimm Troupe and host for the Nightmare Heart. He is an extremely powerful higher being, differing from his canonical counterpart as he has never fully completed a ritual, instead consuming nightmare essence to gradually increase his power over his entire lifespan. Due to his experience in combat he is much deadlier than expected for someone so slim.

Appearance

Grimm is a tall, two-horned, lanky black bug with a red torso and glowing red markings on his limbs. The limbs themselves are longer than average, giving him an uncanny appearance. He has a white face with bright glowing red eyes that have both irises and slit pupils, the area around each eye has a black vertical stripe going from the underside of his face to the top. He wears a long dark grey-blue cloak lined with red along it’s inside.

In his Nightmare King form the two horns on his head are longer and change colour to a bright red, along with his cloak, he also gains another pair of arms that connect to his torso just below his first pair.

Personality

As leader of the Troupe Grimm is stern and authoritative, constantly holding a presence of superiority that allows him to maintain his status and garner respect from his members. He is patient and can even be outwardly charming if necessary, but typically he is reserved, holding his words for when they are most important. Grimm can be stubborn and selfish, and can twist situations and other people’s words in order to achieve an outcome he prefers. He is also known to lie where it benefits him and where he believes he won’t be caught out on it eventually. Despite this he can at points be vulnerable, but only around those he trusts deepest, such as Ameise, his second in command.

History

Before and during the war

Not much of note happened with Grimm before the war, as he was successfully hunting and destroying other kingdoms, occasionally also performing as part of the Nightmare Heart’s ritualistic worship, doubling as a way for the Troupe members to bond and raise morale. Sometimes performances will be done to raise money for the purchase of goods such as instruments, cloth, food, and any other items of use.

After the war

After departing from Hallownest with the rest of the Troupe Grimm leaves the story, but is likely off hunting down other kingdoms just as he did to Hallownest.

Relationships

With Ardentia

Ardentia and Grimm have an extremely turbulent relationship and at first the two got along well, Ardentia often being treated with special privileges. Over time however they start to lose Grimm’s favour and after their continued attempts to garner his attention he abandons them in Hallownest. Despite their coloured history he does not feel any remorse for doing so.

With Ameise & Brumm

A loosely kept secret within the Troupe is Grimm’s relationships with both Ameise, the Troupe’s first member, and Brumm, a reasonably established member. Though the three are extremely all extremely close with each other Grimm fears his status will be lowered should he enter a formal relationships with any of the members. As such he will treat the two with the same level of authority publicly as he would with any other member, but in private is much more open and relaxed.

With The Troupe

Grimm rules over the Troupe through a mixture of authority, respect, and fear. Older members typically understand that he does not pose much of a threat so long as members are respectful and cooperative. Newer members that are used to more independence typically find his presence to be more intimidating and become fearful of him.

With The Nightmare's Heart

Though Grimm and the Nightmare Heart are closely linked the two are not the same, Grimm being a step below it rather than an equal. The two have different motives and personalities and do not see eye-to-eye all the time, however, Grimm has an ultimate loyalty to the Heart and won’t put up much of a fight should the two argue. In an exchange of respect the Nightmare Heart is quite lenient with Grimm’s actions, allowing him to commit deeds they don’t always agree with.

Trivia

  1. Despite his importance in the story Grimm is only seen very quickly or in the shadows in both DARKSIDE and Everyone Is Dumb, only first properly featuring in God
